Question:

Powdered Adderall XR with Antacid?

Ok, so I'm taking Adderall XR 20mg. Next week, I will need it mainly to focus on something in the morning (for 3-4 hours).

What will happen if I pour the beads out, crush them all into a fine powder, and put them back into the capsule?

And, before swallowing the capsule, I take 1 gram of Calcium Carbonate (Antacid)?

Thanks for your help

  1. I wouldn't take an antaacid. But you will probably be very focused-- assuming you really do have ADD.

  2. Tampering with extended release medications will accelerate the absorption of the medication and put you at risk for serious side effects.  The effects may be more pronounced than the standard (non-extended release) formulations as they contain different binders.

The side effects listed in the black box warning for this medication include cardiovascular events (heart attack or stroke) including sudden cardiac death, usually associated with "misuse." (Ahem....)

In other words, probably not the best idea.

  3. Never tamper with pills in a capsule,

Why would you take the antacid? The pills won't mess with your stomach..

If you do not have ADD do not take the pills as you are abusing them

  4. I don't know the drug you are referring to, however the XR stands for extended release. Crushing up the beads into a powder will put all the drug into your system at once.

That being said, taking a drug with an antacid will prevent the drug from fully being absorbed.
