Powell Agent Plays Down Links
Andy Powell's agent has played down various of links that have the Wales national ready to move to a number of other clubs.
It had emerged that Agen were the favourites to sign him from under the noses of a Super 14 side but now his agent has said that at the moment the player does not intend to go anywhere. This will come as a welcome relief to Cardiff fans who may have been expecting they'd seen the last of the player.
His agent insists there have been no formal offers from any club and any rumours that have been circulating within media circles have been blown out of all proportion. There is still time for the situation to change and Powell could still leave the club.
However, if he does not then it will mean that Cardiff will get a huge lift ahead of the new season. If he does leave though it will mean a number of negatives for the side who will be left with a huge gap to fill in the team.
Positives
The positives of Powell staying for Cardiff are numerous. He is a very versatile player who can play in the back or front row of any side. This suggests he is a big powerful unit that the side gets behind in order to drive forward or defend.
His size and power on the field are very intimidating. He has a giant like appearance, which could strike fear into some of the most experienced and unintimidated players going around professional rugby circuits. Cardiff and Wales have used this well as he is often the lead man in packs and scrums trying to get his side up the field.
Him staying would also mean no need for a huge search to try and replace him. This would take a great deal of time and effort because Cardiff would not want to bring in the wrong player in his place. It also means that the club will not have to mess around with contracts and paper work.
Negatives
The negatives of him going, if the reports that he will go contain some form of truth, are widespread. The club will not find a player who carries the same sort of presence and experience. You can sign the biggest player in the world but if he does not know how to play the game then it's a pointless signing.
The club will have to spend money on paying scouts to go out and find them a player who can come in and play a similar role to what Powell did in the team. This is money that should not need to be spent and it is time that the club divert into another area.
A new player means a new contract, which quite often means haggling over terms. In this case a new player may want higher wages than the club is offering. Or they may want additional clauses added to their contract, which the club are reluctant to agree to.
Advice
There is no doubt at all that if Powell does not go anywhere then he will give Cardiff a much bigger chance of doing well next season. They have just had a very successful domestic campaign and Powell may feel no reason to leave. Therefore, it could be worth placing a small wager on Cardiff to win the Magners League next year.
As a player Powell will be successful regardless of where he chooses to go. However, he will never score millions of points so keep this in mind before placing large amounts of money on him to score the most tries.
