Power, Aidan O'Brien’s main hope in St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot
Aidan O'Brien has a strong hand in the St James's Palace Stakes, as he will be represented by two dashing runners, Power and Wrote. The latter is undoubtedly a dangerous sprinter, but Power seems to be Aidan O'Brien’s major hope in the Group 1 event, taking
place at Royal Ascot on Tuesday, June 19th.
Power was terrible on his seasonal debut at Newmarket, where he finished second last in the Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes last month. Despite facing a lot of embarrassment, the 3-year-old did not lose his determination and displayed a wonderful act in his previous
appearance at Curragh.
The Group 1 Abu Dhabi Irish 2000 Guineas saw him sealing a surprise win under A. P. O'Brien’s son, J. P. O'Brien. The dashing colt was not quite fascinating in the early stages of the race, but his fantastic work in the final furlong helped him notch up
the top position with ease.
After establishing his dominance, Oasis Dream’s son made no mistake and secured the first place by a length’s distance. He will once again be ridden by the handler’s son, who is expecting his runner to continue his good work after a blinder at Curragh.
"He ran a blinder at the Curragh and we're hoping for a good run. The ground won't be ideal, but there's nothing you can do about it," said the young jockey.
Gabrial is another interesting candidate in the £167,295 event. After his class-2 triumph at Haydock, Richard Fahey’s charge was given a supplementary entry and despite the fact that stepping up to this grade will put him under tremendous pressure, the connections
are hoping for a positive result.
"Obviously it's a big step up, but he won well the last time and he has worked well since. We do like him so we'll have to see how he gets on tomorrow. He was put up 10lb for winning so it just made it more difficult in handicaps. It's an open race and I
wouldn't be surprised if he ran well. He's on an upward curve and let's hope he keeps on improving," said Robin O'Ryan, who is Richard Fahey's assistant.
