  1. These come in many variants. The most popular ones are shunt devices such as SVCs. These power electronics controlled devices switch in a variables capacitive reactance to the ground. Capacitance has the effect of building up charge and therefore provides voltage support at the nodes concerned. In traditional parlance, this means "injecting leading VARs". This reduces the phase shift between the voltage and current waveforms and improves the power factor.


  2. simply, a capacitor slows up the current so it is in sync with the voltage during the cycle.  its like a d**n that allows the water rate to be constant even during a flood upstream.
