Power Horse defeat Elangeni Ranch by 13-11 to ride into USPA Sun Cup finals
Melissa Ganzi lit the lamp five times and had an assist, as Power Horse marked a convincing 13-11 victory over Elangeni Ranch in the first round of the United States Polo Association (USPA) Sun Cup contested at the Grand Champions Polo Club in Floridian City of Wellington.
The opening chukka of the game was played with fast pace, as both sides were flying on a high momentum. Elangeni Ranch obtained a couple of goals in the head of handicap and doubled the tally by the goals from Juan Chavanne. He scored a goal from the field, while converted another penalty-shot to put his team ahead. Tommy Biddle and Juan Bollini scored one goal each to bring Power Horse into the score net.
Chavanne added another score which was replied by a pair of goals from Biddle and Melissa Ganzi that closed out the chukka with Elangeni Ranch sitting on top with a single goal lead of 5-4.
The second frame was completely dominated by Power Horse which obtained four goals, while holding Elangeni Ranch scoreless in the period. Walter Scherb scored a couple of points while his team-mates, Ganzi and Bollini, added one goal each to establish their first lead in the game.
In order to further expand the lead of Power Horse, Ganzi and Scherb chipped in one goal apiece in the third set of play. The strikers from Elangeni Ranch roared back to make a comeback into the game. Chavanne added another two goals to show their presence onto the field. The first half action concluded with Elangeni Ranch trailing by three points, 10-7.
The fourth round completely belonged to Power Horse that managed another three goals, while holding Elangeni Ranch goal-less in the period. Ganzi scored another couple of goals of which one came on a fine penalty-shot. Scherb added a goal from the field to increase the lead to 13-7. The resilient defence of Power Horse kept Elangeni Ranch once again off the scoreboard and almost established their triumph in the game.
After the four chukkas, it seemed that the strikers from Power Horse got cooled down. They adopted defensive policies in the final two periods. Ruben Gracida and Chavanne added one goal each for Elangeni Ranch to reduce the lead down to four points, 13-9. In the last set of play, Joey Casey and Chavanne scored one goal apiece, but to no avail. Power Horse with the final horn of the time-completion won the game by two goals, 13-11.
Melissa Ganzi set the pace for Power Horse with five goals while his team-mate, Walter Scherb, added four points. Juan Bollini and Tommy Biddle chipped in two goals apiece in the victory.
Juan Chavanne was highest point scorer of the game with seven goals, while his team-mates, Joey Casey and Ruben Gracida, added one score each in the losing effort.
