Question:

Power Steering pump or Rack and Penion?

My 1989 300 zx is leaking a-lot of power steering fluid. I am having no problems steering the car ( hard to turn or noise when I turn). However, I do hear noise when I turn the moment I am out of Power steering fluid. In addition, before the car started leaking, I was told the very low humming noise was coming from my power steering pump.

  1. The pump is OK for now ,if you keep running it out of fluid it may burn it up. If it isn't a hose or connection doing the leaking its the seals in the rack. The easiest ,and cheapest way, is to replace it with re-man. Good luck.

  2. You have to get a idea of where the fluid is going. Look for drips when it is parked. Do they align with the power steering pump or more with the rack? The possible culprits are power steering pump seal, hoses or the rack, but you must do more to find the cause or replace all.

  3. that,s the pump. probably the pressure hose is leaking around the crimp on the hose end.
