Question:

Power Surge! Is the electric company responsible?

Yesterday morning while I was at work, we had a power surge on our block. This is the second time in 2 weeks that this has happened. I guess I was kinda lucky compared to some of my neighbors. My TV, computer, satellite recievers, fan, and alarm clock were all fried. None of them will come on. Half of my neighbors lost their air conditioner units. We've all called the electric company and filed a complaint. We were told that someone would be calling us back within 48 hours. I guess my question is...is the electric company responsible for replacing our electronics? I doubt they will do anything, but I guess is doesn't hurt to ask.

  1. It could depend on what caused the surge.  If something went wrong with the utility equipment, they should cover the damage.  But if somebody hit a utility pole with his car, the driver of the car would be a fault.  Of course, if this has happened twice in 2 weeks, that doesn't sound like a car accident.  Get together with your neighbors and talk to the utility company.  See what they have to say for themselves.  Utilitiy companies are usually pretty good about this kind of thing.  At least around here.

Don't forget about any guarantee that may have come with your surge protector.  Many claim to replace equipment this is damaged due to electrical surge if connected to one of their devices.

  2. Don't be complaining about a fan and alarm clock being fried. Those are cheap and replaceable. As for your TV and computer, shouldn't those be connected to your electrical outlet through a surge protector, no?

Human error, that's all I have to say on this matter.
