Power Surge on USB Hub Port?

i am trying to print something off of my laptop but when i try to connect my printer i get an error that says "power surge on USB hub port" or my computer ont even recognize that the cord is plugged in. i just got back to school and i am using the same printer and cords and laptop that i used last year and i never had this problem last year. i have reset the hub port like it said to but that didn't do anything. please help me!!!

Use a powered hub or connect the cable directly to the laptop.

I had this kind of problem with a hub working fine on one laptop and giving a power surge (with a SD card reader) on the other.

Another approach: connect the hub to the laptop. Switch on the printer and connect it to the hub. If that doesn't work, try it the other way round, it may work.

did you try connecting the printers USB cord directly into the laptop???
