  2. Inverters are available in several smaller sizes.  Anywhere from about 100 watts to 1,000 watts or more.  They typically don't provide very good AC, with noise and spikes on it.  They're limited in watts and running time by the battery connected to it.  A 100 watt load would draw over 8 amps from a 12 volt battery.  A 1,000 watt load would draw over 80 amps from a battery.  You need to recharge or replace the battery when it runs down.

A generator is normally powered by a gas engine.  One can easily power loads from under 100 watts to 50,000 watts and more.  All you need is the right size engine and generator.  It's easy to refill when it runs low on fuel.  They typically provide very clean power.
