my power is out, and will be for up to 2 weeks.

i have an Oscar, a Jack Dempsey and a pleco in a 20 long right now. neither fish is over 3 inches at this point.

the temp is fine, and will not be an issue, the water stays in the low 80's.

light not so much of a problem, there is light from 2 near by windows(it is not in direct light though).

i am doing water changes every 4 days.

anything else i can be doing to keep things going?

  1. If you don't keep water on your filter's your biological filter that lived on your filter will die. You can also buy bubbler's that run on batteries and you can also scoop cups of water from the tank and then pour it back in to make bubbles go into the water. You can buy those battery backups( like they sell for computers) and hook your filter up to that. How are you on the internet without power?

  2. get some snails and some water plants

  3. 1- battery oxygen pumping machine

2- take the fish to shallow water

  4. A small generator would be a very good investment at this point, especially if you're in an area with frequent power outages.  If not, a battery powered air stone would be the least you could do short of sitting at the tank stirring the surface to keep oxygen diffusing into the water.  Also, I would step up the water change to every other day, as ammonia levels will rise much more rapidly without the nitrifying bacteria in the filter to convert it.

EDIT: Ice does not magically produce oxygen as it melts-- it produces liquid water...

  5. plants and oscars don't mix as you will soon find out now lets cover it all temp is an issue keep a close eye on it as long as it stays between 76 and 80 all is good like you said but exspect the worest it is better that way

you should get a battery opperated air pump to create air flow if you have an under gravel filter in the tank get 2 of then and they will make the filter work you need the water flow so that you maintain good air exchange in the tank

the good bacteria wont die as long as the fish are in the tank since most of it is in the gravel

  6. i would get a battery powered air pump to circulate the water so the good bacteria does not die and so your fish get enough oxygen.

pet shops and bait shops should have them

  7. they say if you add ice to the tank it will produce oxygen to the tank  and yes you can get a batt-- air fillter at the local fish bait shop or prob. wallmart

  8. omg... i may not get this.. but.. how r u on the pc if your powers out??live plants would help* maybe you have bamboo*
