Power outage saves Daniel Ruiz as Will Tomlinson successfully defends title – Boxing news
Will Tomlinson, the current International Boxing Organization super featherweight champion, defended his title successfully but in a rather odd manner against the more experienced Mexican challenger, Daniel Ruiz, the former WBC Latino super featherweight
champion, in a 12-round bout held on May 18, 2012.
During the whole bout, Will was the one who set the pace and dominated while battering Daniel substantially but nobody knew that the bout would have ended in a somewhat unorthodox way.
At the end of the seventh round, an electricity failure darkened the whole Melbourne Pavilion arena situated in Flemington, Victoria, Australia. After assuring that the problem cannot be resolved within the legal time limit, the bout-referee decided that
the bout should be halted and the winner is to be decided via point’s card.
On the score cards of all the three designated judges, the Aussie proud Will was the winner. Tomlinson, 25, was entering the bout with a huge experience disadvantage. Though he has a flaw less resume which boasted an undefeated win streak yet he was overshadowed
substantially by Ruiz’s 32-bout experience.
Will was entering in his career’s 20th bout and boasted 18 wins and just one draw decision. The Aussie proud, also known as ‘The Wild Will’, collided with Alan Herrera and grabbed not only a unanimous decision win but also the International Boxing Organization
super featherweight title.
His Friday night opponent, Daniel, well known as the ‘Canerito’, was entering in his career’s 33rd bout and boasted 27 wins. He has nailed 19 of his opponents by knockout as compared to Will’s 12 KO wins.
Tomlinson started things off in a confident manner and did not allow Daniel to use his height advantage. It was the raw powered jabs of Will that flattened Ruiz in the very first round of the bout.
Will generated classic right-left combinations that connected Ruiz’s body and face and inflicted huge damage. During the third round, Will received a cut on his forehead due to an accidental collision.
Till the end of the seventh round, every one even the critics were unanimous on the fact that Tomlinson will grab an early knockout win but this did not happen as the power outage saved Ruiz from further punishment and obliteration.
The judges allocated 70-62, 70-62, and 69-63 to Will who after the successful first title defence stated, “Massive things will happen now. We have opened up a new page in Melbourne boxing. If I’d boxed terrible and just scraped through and that happened,
I’d be gutted, but I’m so happy with the way I boxed. He would have been disappointed the fight didn’t finish but he was feeling my power so probably deep down he was relieved it was stopped.”
With this win Will has further strengthened his portfolio by 19 wins whereas Ruiz has collected his career’s fifth loss.
