Indonesian shuttlers proved their mettle as five Men’s Singles shuttlers entered in the round-of-16 after beating their opponents from different countries in the second round of the 2011 Macau Open Grand Prix, on Wednesday, November 30, in Macau.
Indonesia’s Men remained successful in occupying five positions at the top-16 stage by putting up a stunning show of flawless badminton at the indoor arena in Macau. They played superb badminton and proved that the country has potential shuttlers who can
lead the world.
It was Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka who started the day by playing against Chinese Taipei’s Shih Hua Teng in the second round of Men’s Singles draw. It was a tough and entertaining fight when both shuttlers displayed their top class skills. The Indonesian took
the first game with a tight score but lost the second set to the Taipei opponent with reasonable margin.
In the final game, the Taipei shuttler failed to continue playing positive game as Rumbaka was everywhere in the court. The Indonesian played with aggression and spared no chance for his opponent and won the match with a fantastic margin. The final score
of this second round 51-minute fight was 22-20, 16-21 and 21-11.
Then, Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia, who is in tremendous form at the moment, also stamped his victory in the second round of the tournament. He was facing Wee Chung Pei of Malaysia, who failed to put up any sort of strong resistance. Sugiarto played killing
badminton in this straight-set match as he faced no fight from his Malaysian challenger. The Indonesian finished both games in just 23 minutes by a completely one-sided 21-3 and 21-9 score on the board.
The following fight was between Indonesia’s top shuttler and World Number One, Taufik Hidayat and Hong Kong’s talented player, Nan Wei. Taufik, who is the former World Champion and Olympic gold medallist played with precision against his opponent and bagged
the match in straight games.
The Indonesian showed no mercy to Nan in the opening game and took it easily. However, the second game was close until the ending points when Taufik played with aggression and won the set. The end result of this 34-minute match was 21-13 and 21-19.
The fourth winner from Indonesia in the second round was Alamsyah Yunus, who thrashed Hong Kong’s Yun Lung Chan in straight sets. The Indonesian remained in a strong position throughout the match as his opponent was lacking the finishing touch. Yunus played
composed badminton in both sets and remained successful in finishing the match in just 32 minutes with a 21-17 and 21-11 score on the board.
Simon Santoso was the last winner of the day from Indonesia as played perfect badminton against Malaysia’s young shuttler, Zulfadli Zulkiffli, who is the ruling World Junior Champion. The experience Santoso spared no chance for the young Malaysian in the
first game and took it without any trouble.
However, the Malaysian played well in the second set and remained close until the concluding phase when Santoso controlled the rallies and finished the set with a close margin. The final score of this 40-minute Men’s Singles contest was 21-15 and 21-18.
Five spots from Indonesian shuttlers in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 have made their chances bright to get precious ranking points by securing good results in this Grand Prix tournament.
