  1. What you described would not be a power surge but a momentary power outage or brown out.  A brown out is when the voltage on the power lines is reduced for one reason or another.  A power surge would cause the light to brighten and possibly blow out.  A power surge can be caused by lightning striking or striking near the power lines.  To protect your electronic equipment check into buying some surge protectors.  If you are worried about losing information on your computer you could consider getting a UPS (uninterpretable power supply) this will keep the computer running for a while during a power failure.  Also some of the higher end surge protectors can also protect the cable/satellite inputs, telephone and DSL connections.

  2. No. Power surges are EXTREMELY VERY RARE! It's almost impossible. The lightning would have had to travel through under the ground and hit something along the way and distribute through your home. Which you would see if a lightning struck through your walls.

Your power lines near by probably were disturbed by a tree from winds if you are having a storm. Usually during thunder storms it is trees from the strong winds, that cause the power outages by knocking down the power lines and flickering of the lights or reset of our clocks. Don't worry. If your power goes out and your neighbors power goes out during a storm, I never call the power company because it's useless because someone has already.

If you don't have neighbors and your power stays completely out for a few days, then it's okay to call the power company to find out if it is an isolated issue.

Usually during storms like that our clocks or which ever equipment such as computers have eternal clocks which do reset them selves automatically if a forced shut down occurred from a memory chip.

You don't need to do anything about it. You are fine this is normal and common. Is this the first time living on your own?? I know how it is if it has been the first time living on your own. You question everything like what is that sound? Or how do I fix this etc. or is this broken? Especially when we are used to our family doing it growing up. I would not worry about any fires from that. Just make sure you have smoke detectors and they work so if there ever were you would be able to react from the smoke detector if it goes off.

    I hope I helped!
