Power to a hot water tank?

does the hot water tank need to be on its own breaker and if not how many outlets can be on the same curcuit as it with a 15 or 20 amp breaker

  1. It needs to be on it's own


  2. A water heater consumes a fair amount of power.  Generally, a 30 - 50 gallon tank would be on a 30 amp breaker.  Also, most water heaters are 240 volt, while your outlets should be 120 volt.  

    So, yes, the heater needs to be on its own circuit, no additonal outlets.

  3. Hot water tanks are usually on their own breaker.

  4. It needs to be on its own 30 amp 240 v breaker
