Power to go for the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday after winning the Curragh in September
After winning the Curragh this September, A P O’Brien is now destined for the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. It was in 2009 that A P O’Brien won these Stakes with Beethoven under Ryan Moore as last year the title was taken away by Sir henry
Cecil’s Frankel who was being ridden by Tom Queally.
From 2006 to 2008, the Stakes have been won by J S Bolger’s representatives Teofilo, New Approach and Intense Focus under the same jockey K J Manning.
The Dewhurst Stakes is a Group 1 flat horse race that is held in Britain each year in October and it is open for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and fillies. This race is for over a distance of seven furlongs. This event was inculcated in 1875 and is considered
to be most prestigious race for juvenile horses.
A P O’Brien trained Power won the Curragh on 10th September, A P O’Brien had three other entries in the same race, David Livingston who came third with P J Smullen.
Furner’s Green finished behind David Livingston and was being ridden by C O’Donoghue. The third entry, Vault, got done with the race second last with Jamie Spencer riding him.
Power did not take long to start tracking the leaders in fourth, ridden from two furlong out, a moderate second over one furlong out and then closed in and led for the remaining 50 yards out, staying consistent till the finish line.
Mrs John Harrington’s Dragon Pulse was the second to race through the wire with F M Berry onboard.
Out of four Curraghs, Power had won three and it was the race on 7th August this season that turned into a defeat for Power who qualified as a runner up in that race.
He did stay prominent throughout the race, struggled over the lead before halfway, led under two furlong out, soon ridden and kept on well inside the final furlong and finished close home second.
Michael Mulvany trained Tough As Nails positioned third in the race with G F Carroll onboard.
Power’s entry in the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes has put him forth to a chance of winning once more and claiming the title for which so many will be contesting at Newmarket on Saturday.
