We have a AC window unit that we only use some days when we need it. We always set it on power saver mode so it turns itself off once the temperature is reached. But, does it use more power turning itself off and on than it would if left running?

  1. Air conditioner units, window or otherwise, are large power users. You  save  when you have it set on a power saving mode.. It does take considerable power for it to turn itself on again but less than keeping it running all the time. And wouldn't the fact that it kept running all the time  defeat the purpose of keeping a comfortable temperature in the room?

  2. If you are sitting there, turning it on and off, on and off, on and off, all day long, that will use more energy. However, your AC unit, on auto, isn't going to be using extra energy in the power saver mode.
