Prabhjot Singh to play for Karnataka in 1st Senior Men’s National hockey tournament: Hockey News
Yesterday, on June 8, Punjab’s striker, Prabhjot Singh, has been announced as one of the 18 players to play for Karnataka in the 1st Senior Men’s National hockey tournament, which is to be conducted in Bhopal from June 10-19.
The tournament will be conducted under the aegis of Hockey India (HI) after a gap of four years. It was last hosted by the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) in 2006. The international veteran is all set to show his abilities to the utmost for his new team with
a gratitude to his Bangalore-based employer whom he joined right after graduating from school.
On asking about the decision to change his represented state, Prabhjot replied, "There are around four-five players in IOCL who are from Karnataka. So I thought it would be better to team up with my regular mates on the field. It is a well-balanced side
and that should work as an advantage for the team and make us competitive enough to beat any other side in the event."
He represented Punjab, his home-state, during school and was considered the strongest key player for his side. It was strange for him to represent a new side or state for the first time ever in his career.
Hockey Karnataka (HK) has also named one of his oldest IOCL companions, Deepak Thakur, for representing the Karnataka side, which is to be led by the captain Amar Aiyamma.
The 30-year-old is positive regarding his return to the national team for participating in the major events ahead like Champions Trophy and Olympic qualifiers. His last international appearance was when he played the 2010 World Cup that was held in New Delhi,
representing India.
Moreover, he suggested regarding the national event, "The selectors should pick the national team on the basis of performance in the Nationals and the current form augurs well for me. I was named the best forward in the last month's All-India Obaidullah
Gold Cup tournament in Bhopal."
The veteran player is expected to play in his regular position, on the left side of the front-line, while playing for Karnataka in the event.
