Question:

Practical Combat situation- Defense against a Right Hook?

To start off, I'm a boxing instructor at a gym, so I know the basic defense for either a right/left hook, which is basically sticking your glove to your ear to absorb the blow, or bobbing and weaving. However, I like to think in hypothetical situations concerning real life applications for fighting, so I have been thinking about how to defend against a Right Hook/Right Overhand. If you do what is taught in boxing and stick your hand next to your ear in real life with no gloves, you will break your hand.

So I came up with this combination againt a Right Hook, which is:

Karate Outward Block, Cross, Left Head Hook, Cross

Of course I wouldn't raise my hand to the opposite ear, just raise it in that position to deflect the arm blow, like this:

So tell me, do you think this combination is good, and do you think there are limitations to it. Your input will be much appreciated. Thanks!

  1. heh id just punch them right in the face

  2. Part of the "hold your hand to your ear" technique is thrusting your elbow forward. It's just like countering a round-house kick by kicking straight (which is faster/shorter distance). So I agree, if you just stood there and took a hooking punch to the ear with your hand up there, you'll just get a busted hand... but if you reflexively do that and lean forward a bit, you may bust him in the jaw before his punch comes around.

But yes, of course, keeping distance is safest. :) It's just not always a choice.

  3. Well if you have no gloves you better roll and weave or duck. If you did have gloves it would be a right hand block or a left hand block if a southpaw is fighting you.

  4. best defense for hooks( L/R) is always to keep distance.

you'll never know when you gonna get it. that's why they are potent strikes.

  5. Block left, circle in with right elbow to face.
