Practice makes perfect - is it true for golf?
There is a great saying that practice makes the man perfect in any walk of life. Irrespective of your profession, practice will help you in raising your own standard. Especially in sports, one has to practice really hard to be among the best but is it really
true for golf as well?
A sport is a sport and so it demands practice for perfection. It does not matter what sport you play, the moral is that if you do not practice you will not succeed. But how is it possible in golf? After all, one just has to swing a club and he can do it
at any time.
Golf is one of the most difficult and technical sports of the world. This golf swing after all is not just a swing, there is whole lot of science behind it.
When you swing a golf club, almost every muscle in your body is in movement and it has to be absolutely perfect. Otherwise a golfer will not be able to strike the ball properly and chances are that he might injure himself up.
Every golf course is not same. There are many different kinds of courses and weather conditions that are there in the world.
If a golfer is not used to playing in different conditions he will not succeed in any tournament and for that to happen a golfer must train and practice in different settings.
A player must remain in touch with his game even in the off days to keep his touch and feel for the game. Practicing in golf is very important because a slightest of error in golf can lead to drastic errors.
Arnold Palmer once said “if people would just swing like their practice swings they would play much better”. He alluded to the fact that we swing slow and relaxed in our practice swings, then we step up to the ball and tighten our grips and swing harder.
Maybe that is the problem. We should practice swing the exact speed and grip that we are going to use on the actual shot. Then we can transfer one to the other.
This is where the practice comes in. A golfer must perform the swing in a similar way to which he swings at the practice field. The problem is that players do not practice as hard as they should and when they step up to the tees they make mistakes.
Same goes at the greens as well, while practicing they are pretty calm and cool but in the tournaments they just do not feel comfortable while performing putts. The reason for this is probably the lack of rightly guided practice.
Golf is not only about just tee shots and putts. One has to have high levels of concentration. How can one improve his concentration levels?
He can do it by playing rounds after rounds after rounds in a tournament like atmosphere. Apart from these there are other exercises as well to improve the concentration.
So to me practice does make things better for a golfer simply because every things demands hard work and practice.
After all success does not come guaranteed.
