Question:

Practicing Trumpet...without the Trumpet?

I'm not allowed to bring my trumpet overseas, where my vacation is.

But I am allowed to bring my mouthpiece. So are there any other exercises besides lip buzzing and mouthpiece-blowing that I can do with the mouthpiece only that can help preserve and even possibly improve my trumpet skills?

  1. Sometimes taking a brake from it will do you good. You could try to find some music with trumpets to listen to while you'r there.

  2. i dont think so. sorry.

  3. get trumpet hero for xbox

  4. With your mouthpiece, go through the fingerings of any songs &/or exercises you're currently working on. Blow in the mouthpiece just like you would if you were actually playing. Doing that should keep you from losing any muscle tone in your mouth and lips and will hopefully keep your fingers used to the general movements.

  5. You could practice on your breathing.  See how long you can keep a piece of paper on the wall just by blowing on it.  The more you do this, the more air capacity you will build in your lungs.

Since you have the mouthpiece, how about learning to double and triple-tongue, if you don't already know how?

You may want to take a theory work book at the next level so that you can build those skills.

Take some pieces that you will work on when you get back so that you can analyze them while you are away.  Load some of the recordings on an MP3 player or portable disc player and listen to them and get familiar with them.

If you're a jazzer, take some recordings of great jazz solos and some blank staff paper and transcribe the solos if you are to that level yet.

Buzz along on your mouthpiece with recordings to get the tonguing, phrasing, breathing, partial control and dynamics right.

Most importantly, look at this time as an opportunity and not a setback to your playing.  You might find that this will improve your playing more than you know.

  6. u should practice by acting like u have a full trumpet. Blow in  to the mouth piece with different strengths and move ur fingers on the air acting like there is a trumpet.
