Question:

Practicing riding a motorcycle?

I've signed up for MSF courses but classes are filled up until the middle of next month. I have friends who have been riding that can help me out a bit.. but I was curious.. is this illegal since I don't have my license yet?

How do people usually practice for the driving test legally? Is this only possible in the MSF course?

  1. You can still go to the DMV and get a learners permit. Each state has different requirements from motorcycle learners permits. Some make you have a licensed bike rider riding his bike with you, other states just dont let you ride on freeways or after dark with a learners.

  2. Every state has their own rules and regulations when it comes to the motorcycle tests and laws. In Alabama, the only thing that is required is a written test to get it added. Also, I would say that in general, it is illegal to drive on public roads without a license. However, if you can find somewhere like a really large and deserted parking lot, that would be a good place to practice clutch control. If you know someone who has a dirt bike, this would also provide some valuable experience in not only balance, but also in clutch and braking skills, as near all dirt bikes are laid out the same as street bikes.

I just graduated my MSF course, and they were very exceptional in teaching you essential skills. I had never had any motorcycle experience, and came out of there feeling confident enough to drive one safely. My biggest concern was countersteering, but they will teach you a skill, then reinforce it with every following exercise. You will learn a lot real fast, but if you pay attention and practice what they teach you will become a very successful rider. Hope to see you on the road soon :)

  3. If you have a permit (for the MSF) AND he has a license then you can practice.  But he has to be withing some distance (different limit for different states).

    Good Luck...
