Praises poured on Barry Larkin as he enters the Hall of Fame – MLB News
The Cincinnati Reds’ Barry Larkin who on Monday, January 9, became the newest entrant of the Baseball Hall of Fame received acknowledgements for his notable career, worthy of excellence and greater value.
While it was, beyond any shadow of a doubt, an incredibly exciting moment for him, others spoke highly of the player who has remained 12 time National League All-Star. Not only that, thrice did this Cincinnati Reds’ short-stop win the Golden Glove Award.
"Barry was the most complete shortstop in the National League during his era," said Eric Davis, a team-mate from 1986-91 and '96. "He could do everything. His knowledge of the game was second to none, he took pride in being an all-around player and he did
whatever it took to win a game. Barry was the most unselfish star player I ever played with. We would not have won the 1990 World Series without him. He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame."
Indeed, the 1990 World Series was one of the most incredibly exhilarating moments not only for the Cincinnati Reds, but also for Larkin. His greatness lay not only in notching up big awards, but he also had a wonderful batting average.
He had a .295 average throughout his career which was a fantastic achievement; something a player could aspire and achieve with considerable difficulty. He had a competitor in Cal Ripken who also praised the player.
Ripken, while expressing his candid views on Larkin, maintained that he was a player who represented the Cincinnati Reds not only on the field, but off the field and whenever he remembered Larkin; he did as a smart player both at short-stop and the plate.
Not only that, Ripken stated that he wished Larkin had played in the same league.
Fans did not remain behind in pouring heaps of praise on the player. One of the fans said Larkin has remained a pure class act and Hall of Famer is a title that suits the player. The fact that he got no less than 495 votes placed him in a much more unique
position than any competitor this time.
