  1. Like Amber said, it is required that you pass in most states to get licensed...in others to get Highly Qualified. I don't think it makes any difference if you pass with a 144 or a 194, as long as you pass.  No one has ever asked to see my Praxis grade in any of my interviews....just a copy of my license! I think basically if you want to teach in a state with Praxis requirements...you either pass it and have a career--or you don't and have limited teaching career opportunities. You can either teach in a lower paying private school )that may not require licensure) or do something else in education like become a paraeducator.

Some people just don't test well and just develop more and more anxiety each time they sit for it...I think these people who are "weeded out" might be the best because they can be sensitive to students who have this test anxiety and help them through it.

I think the best advice is to study for it, learn the techniques to do well on the test (mainly time management), and pass it.

  2. that is hard to say cus' each state has different laws and certification requirements. I live in NJ and without that Praxis - your not teaching.. and in college you cant be placed for your final internship in the classroom without passing first - its a big deal here. I took it in April and was terrified.. i did buy a book and studied... like a month ...  def go online and take the example test there - there were 2 questions directly from there onthe real test...  def go over math and science... everyone i knew has taken it more than once and some are still trying to pass it.. but i passed.... with a 153 which isnt amazing but i did lol all u need is a 141

  3. It has a definite effect in that you cannot teach in NC without passing both the Praxis I and II. As to the value of that effect, it is a waste of time. As a retired school principal I can tell you that I have had to release great teachers who were one or two points away (no margin of error) and in turn I had to hire person who passed both with flying colors who did not possess a clue to what teaching was all about. The continue effect of this weeding out is to continue to lower the education of students by having to release people who truly should be teaching in the classrooms of America. If this process continues, America's schools will continue to fail. We must find another answer.

  4. Basically, it is pass or fail. I've never known someone who was a good teacher and studied to have failed. If you fail you cannot get a permanent license until you do. It's just another hoop to jump through. The problem is that it weeds out some of the people who would be the best teachers because they are sick of the low pay, disrespect, and extra "c**p" to deal with. Too bad.
