Can anyone tell me which museum in Cusco or Lima has the most and best genuine gold pre-Columbian artifacts? I have surfed the net to no true avail.

  1. The most variety of gold artifacts are divided mainly between the Museo de la Nacion and Museo de Oro.  Both are in Lima. Here are the links and you can find information online.

  2. A decade ago it would deffinately be the Gold Museum at Lima, Peru. This is a private collection of Miguel Mujica Gallo (now deceased). His aristocratic family runs the museum and at some point a member of their staff exchanged some important objects for replicas (this is known but not proven because it's a private collection and they don't want to go public).

Even so (replicas or not), there isn't any other museum like it in Peru.

The other museum i've heard of is in Colombia (Museo de Oro del banco de la Republica), but I don't think they have as many pieces as the one in Lima. The gold pieces are mainly Pre-Inka because the spaniards melted down everything they got their hands on in Peru and Mexico.

I know there is a museum in Cuzco, Museo de Arte Precolombino de Cusco. They say they have jewlery in gold, silver, bones and sea shells (spondylus, Mullu in quechua) and another one, the Museo Inca de la Universidad Nacional San Antonio Abad Cusco they mention funerary metal work.

I've never been to neither museus at Cuzco because at the time I was visiting in 1996 we wanted to go to the first one, but since they didn't have a place to exhibit, the pieces were piled up on boxes inside a bank, so I don't think this is a big collection.

  3. Museo de la Nacion in  Lima.
