my daughter (first born) will be able to go to pre-k this fall. i called the georgia board of education to get some information. they say that they do lottery drawings!! i couldnt believe it. my daughter is very smart so i figured this would help her get prepared for kindergarden.it is crazy of how much proof that i have to bring to just to put her in the drawing. to be honest i hate to get all this info to them and she not be picked. anyway, my question is...how important is pre-k for children?? is lottery drawings "normal"?? is the lottery pick set up to how signs first gets in??

  1. I'm a teacher, I don't heard about lottery drawings, but they are some institution that has their own strategies, so probably thats one, but to answer your question, pre-k for children, really not necessary, specially nowadays that fast vivid technologies (

Alive, animated, fresh, full of life, or spirited; clearly and sharply perceptible; having existence; a living characteristic)

If you are not a working mom, I suggest you don;t have to send your child to school, just be resourceful, child's learning starts at home, you are the very first teacher of your kid, don't have to send her to school, instead, print some educational aids that fitted for her age, you can search online for all the types of lessons you wish your kids to know, in fact, its all basic of course.

Child development is always in every stage and in proper processes.

On the other hand, let your daughter intermingle with other kids well develop their mind faster , however it is not necessarily to send her to pre-k if you think she is already ready the next level of her education.

  2. I know Pre-K helps out kids a great deal with socialization and some basics before entering Kindergarten. If you are not comfortable with her going, you could find out what they are teaching her (outside of socialization) and work with her at home. To help with socialization, find a play date group or an activity with children her age. I think the whole "lottery" idea is in terrible. Good Luck on your decision!!!

  3. i have never heard of lottery drawings before when it comes to pre-k. but honestly, i don't think that pre-k is all that important, as long as you spend some time daily with your child, going over the basics. stuff that could get her ready for kindergarten(A,B,C'S, 1,2,3'S , COLORS, SHAPES) stuff like that. 1 of my children went to pre-k and the other 2 didn't, and i really didn't notice much of a difference in their learning. i understand not wanting to give out that much info, and then not even get picked, at least in kindergarten, you give all your info and then they definitely start school. plus, i feel like kids get burnt out on so much school, so 1 less year that they don't have to go, is better on them, let them be little and stay home while they can. good luck.

  4. I have 2 children and I have never heard of lottery drawings for pre k. It is important for a child to go to pre k. If you dont want to go with that system is there a daycare area near you that has preschool? That would be the same thing. Pre K helps a child learn people skills, and gives education so it would be helpful. But it is also something you can work with them at home, if you like.

  5. they do lottery for the pre k that are at actual schools. you can always enroll her in a daycare that is funded by the GA Prek and is done on first come first serve basis.

  6. I'm in Toronto, and we don't have pre-K here. One of my sons is in SK right now and the other will start JK in September. I don't think PreK is needed. But I do go to the kids websites and download worksheets for my boys. We have "play school" at home and night and they love it. They don't realize that I am really just pushing their learning forward. My SK is already doing grade 1 math and reading activities and my little one is learning very quickly.

  7. you don't need to put her in pre-k. you can do the same stuff they do there at home. i'm in georgia too and i know they have these really cool school stores called the School Box were you can get anything you need.

  8. preschool is not just for your child to learn ABC and 123. its a place where she can get used to have children around it will help her to get ready for kindergarten, to be able to follow a schedule and learn how to take turns with other children. it will help her learn how to sit down for a story time and how to go out and play with every one, preschool will help your child vocabulary when she talks to all of the children with her. so you need to try your best to get your child in a preschool.

  9. I would try as hard as you can.  Preschool is so very important in the development in their social learning.  We have to deal with people the rest of our lives and if we don't develop appropriate social skills before the important school years than we will struggle in everyday life! Our school career will suffer.

I have not heard of the lottery here (Missouri)

  10. I think it all depends on how much you work with your kid. If you are doing learning activities and stuff like that at home pre-k isn't that important. And no, a lottery is not normal..................

  11. Interesting. I don't live in GA. and to be truthful... I just recently heard about this lottery procedure.  It sounds unusual.  Here in our state they have state funded programs for those who qualify but then we can choose to pay for preK in programs that are not affilated with the government.

As for whether you daughter needs pre-K...I recommend it mainly for the social side of things.  It's a great transition to begin working with peers and other adults in a regular classroom.  You definately have the option of "home-schooling" preschool.  There are many resources for you out there...websites, libraries, etc.

My son does attend a preschool program because I do child care and the children were all younger than him so he needed to be around his peers.  I definately do not send him for "cognitive" learning.  They do get a little from the program but most everything he has learned...it's been from home.  He just turned 5 and presently we are working on telling time, money, and he's doing great with his reading.  Of course none of that is taught in preK.  Good luck in your decision.

  12. I m studding to be a teacher, and in may will be certified in early education. It is important if u urself have not worked with her ever since she was young. Also it is good for her to interact with other children. At a young age children develop and learn through playing. I work in a day care with the pre-k age, and we do many different activities with them other then just teaching them the ABC's and 123's. We have working with them to recognize letters rather then just memorize them. And to recognize the letters in their names and know how to write their names. WE talk about senses, colors, and each week we have a theme and we do activities with the theme.

As for the lottery drawing i believe that it is normal, I live in Michigan and here we have first come first serve type of deal.
