Pre-calculus help, beginning chapters, so review from algebra?

i know this sounds really stupid but i forget what it mean when it says n^1/2. as in n to the 1/2 power...what does 1/2 mean??? i know the numerator and denominator do different things to the number...but i forget which is which...HELP

its actually sqrt(n)

if it was n^1/3 it would be cbrt(n)

if it was n^2/3 it would be cbrt(n^2)
