  1. get rid of the fractions by cross multiplications (multiply both sides by v then by v-4) and you get 4v-16 = v^2-6v.  then put the v terms on the same side by subtracting 4v from both sides --> -16 =v^2 - 10v.  Then add 16 to both sides to get 0 = v^2 - 10v +16.

Next, factor the quadratic equation.  I do this by finding factors of the constant (ie 16) that equal the number in the middle, like -8 and -2 (-8 *-2 = 16 and -8+ -2 = -10)  so then you get (v-8)(v-2) = 0.  Since either of these need to equal zero for the whole thing to be zero, you get v-8 =0 and v-2 = 0, resulting in v=8 and v=2 as your answers.

  2. Evaluate for v?

Did your teacher say anything about conjugates?

Try interactmath.com it helped me through Pre-Calculus, I don't wanna just give you the answer, because it won't help.
