Pre-existing medical conditions question.

Hello. I am currently on Social Security Disability but am looking to return to the workforce. Unfortunately, I was recently diagnosed with COPD. My initial problems for obtaining Disability are mostly resolved. So, if I return to work and sign up for Group Coverage, will they have to cover the COPD and Anxiety?

I have read where I can keep Medicaire for 4 years after returning to work, but am still curious is the same rules apply with Group Coverage.

Thanks.

  1. Your question is a bit confusing. Do you have medicare or medicaid? Either way, your group insurance will be primary. If the group insurance has a waiting period to cover pre-existing conditions, the time that you have been on medicare and/or medicaid can be applied to that waiting period.

Some group policies do not have an exclusionary waiting period for pre-existing conditions.

  2. You can keep both medicare and group coverage. But keep this in mind, group policies do not have a pre-existing condition clause.

  3. Loose lips sink ships. Don't go blabbing about it - with company insurance companies,  it's often "don't ask; don't tell," and it might not be a problem unless you make it into one by opening your mouth.

  4. Most but not all, group policies do not have a pre-existing condition clause. You can keep Medicare and your group coverage. Just make sure you tell your group coverage that you have medicare so that you know which one is primary.

  5. Generally, pre-exisiting does not come into play at all if you don't have any lapse in coverage. If you've been on Medicare/Medicaid w/ no laps you won't have to worry about pre-ex at all
