US retailer, Target, has continued the trend of retailers leaking information before publishers have made it official by releasing pre-order cards complete with release dates and the game’s title.
Activision was set to officially unveil the next instalment in their immensely successful Call of Duty series on the 1st of May at midnight. Speculation surrounding the game has grown exponentially over the past couple of weeks as the official
reveal date drew ever closer.
Rumours of the game being titled, ‘Black Ops 2’ first emerged when Activision and Treyarch, the game’s developer, registered a domain by that name and the rumour mill has been in full swing ever since. Many wondered what Treyarch would do in order to freshen
things up in what is becoming an increasingly stale series.
Rumours of Black Ops 2 being set in the near future also emerged recently when a picture on CallofDuty.com linked players to a YouTube video by FPS Russia, who hinted that the quad-rotor RC could be making an appearance in the next game.
However, any hopes Activison had of being the first to their own punch seem to have disappeared as US retailer, Target, seems to have beaten them to their own party. Target, released a number of pre-order cards for the upcoming game, complete with title
and release date.
The cards indicate that the game is scheduled for release on the 13th of November, which is in line with the time period that Activision usually releases their Call of Duty titles.
Also the card confirms what everyone already knew, the title of the game, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. The pre-order cards on sale are available for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
On a slightly less related note, the ‘reservation card’ is priced at $1 according to the picture posted by IGN.com
Activision will be livid with themselves as once again a leak has ruined their big reveal. Last year the entire single-player campaign plot had been leaked weeks in advance forcing the publisher to push its reveal ahead.
The studio will have been hoping that history does not repeat itself, yet judging by the frequency and accuracy of the leaks, it seems that gamers may find out more than they want about Black Ops 2 than when they should.
