Pre paid connectin confussion?

I want to take a prepaid connection ...can some one suggest me best offer avaiable...I live in Rochester NY...I m confused about wether I need to a have contact ...or can I just buy a cell phone seperatly and use a pre paid connection...can some1 help me in this matter ...I havecpost paid connection contact with version which is making by buget go hay way which ends ind ec 2008...plz suggest the cheapest way to go about...I just need to call and recive some International calls...that 2 notvso frequently and make some local phone call within Rochester NY...thanks for the help...

There are a lot of ways to do this, but the easiest solution is to go into a Walmart, Target, or RadioShack and look at the prepaid phones that they have packaged up and ready to go.  

Personally I think Virgin Mobile is the best prepaid service in the US since they are really easy to setup, have great customer care, and use Sprint's network.  You may find that another prepaid service such as MetroPCS or Cricket has better coverage in your area though.
