Question:

Pre-school rates?

How many parents have to pay for days of school that are Holidays? I sure would like to contest this in payments I went to school thinking I did not have to pay full pop due to Martin Luther King day, and the lady said why would you think that, than I would have to pro-rate the whole year of school not being open for Holidays, I was like "SO". Honestly schools do not get paid for not having students in on Holidays. So my question is, is this standard or do I have a fight on my hands? I was not even aware of this 15 years ago I paid for full private school as a single mom working I had no choice but to keep my guy in school full time. Now I am a stay at home mom with a 4 year old in pre-school and this is the first time a Holiday came up for me besides Christmas. I was like blind-sided that they could even ask for this money, I already know they are on the expensive side for costs. However I do think it is not fair that on closed legal holidays the school can charge you for that day.

  1. I am a director at a child care center. We charge for holidays also. Our yearly tuition rate is broken down into the weekly rate that you pay. Just as bankers, supermarket cashiers and garbagemen expect to get paid for holidays, pre-school teaches and daycare workers get paid for those days as well. Trust me, no one is getting rich off of your child's tuition. This is the norm in this area as I am sure it is in your area.  I doubt you would get very far by arguing about it, as I am sure that the other pre-schools around you will have the same policy.

  2. My child goes to an excellent day care that charges for a full week also even if one or two days is a holiday.

Day Care is not baby sitting...you can not look at it as an hourly or daily charge.  The fees are broken down by week.

Personally I am glad to pay even for the days off because I know they are taking excellent care of my child. If you do not like it then find another place.

If you break down their weekly rate into an hourly rate I am sure it would be difficult to hire a private babysitter for that price.

It could be worse...I have a friend whose day care provider follows the local school calendar.  When the students are off they are closed...period!  That includes spring break and in-service days...Imagine that.  You are paying for a week of daycare and you work Monday through Friday.  The school kids are off one Monday for a teacher in-service day and your day care is closed!  So I say, grin and bear it!
