Pre season cardinals game?

My dad and I were watching the cardinals play the raiders tonight and he made a comment about how it was a pre season game. I didn't want to mention it at the time but I don't know what that is! So my question is basically what are pre seaon games and what is the point in them?

Pre Season games are pretty much to see who is going to start the real season.  The real season starts the Sunday after labor day. That is when the pre season is over.

pre-season: 4 practice games for the back-up players/new players before the regular season starts.

its so they can test there picks and second and third strings in real action so they can figure out the teams
