Preakness prospects work at Churchill Downs, while Went The Day Well gets confirmed for the Pimlico show
Team Valor International’s Went The Day Well couldn’t turn in a performance like that of last year’s Kentucky Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, in this year’s Derby, but his run would have given Graham Motion a lot of confidence for other big races lined up,
for example the middle jewel of the Triple Crown, the Grade 1, $1 million Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.
Along with the potential candidates of the Preakness Stakes on 19 May, 2012, Went The Day Well worked over the fast main track at Churchill Downs, after being confirmed for the Preakness Stakes.
The Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes winner at Churchill Downs on 28 April, Hierro, coupled with exercise rider Carlos Rosas worked half a mile in 52 seconds flat for trainer Steven Asmussen, who sent the colt alone to work.
Isn’t He Clever, who did not feature in the Kentucky Derby for Asmussen, looks to take the field at Pimlico on 19 May to run in the Preakness Stakes after exiting an eighth place finish at Oaklawn Park in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby.
Carlos Rosas after working Hierro, worked Isn’t He Clever, and the pair went five furlongs in 1 minute and 2 seconds.
After the work, Steven Asmussen said that both horses look good for the Preakness Stakes, and could be becoming part of the full field at Pimlico.
"We have not made a decision on the Preakness," Isn't He Clever's owner J. Kirk Robison said from El Paso, Texas. "We want to see how the race is shaping up and do the best thing for our horse. He will work again next Monday and we may not have a decision
until then."
Graham Motion trained Went The Day Well will take the ride with Derby winner I’ll Have Another to Baltimore to run in the Preakness Stakes.
"We were fortunate enough to catch a ride with the Derby winner (I'll Have Another) to Baltimore today," Motion said of the fourth-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby. "He is doing well and the plan is to run in the Preakness as long as he is doing well."
