This involves scatter plots.

I have a table with two sets of numbers. I'm supposed to some how find a "liner model for the data" using a graphing calculator using its "regression capabilities". Pleease, show me the steps to find the answer to this.

Many, many thanks.

  1. Ok, with a graphing calculator you go to STAT, then edit and add the data numbers in L1 and L2. Quit the screen. (2nd Mode)

Once you do this you go to STAT, then CALC, and go down to 4: Lingreg.

Press enter and you should get a linear regression equation/model for the data. Just substitute the values for a and b in the equation.

For your scatter plot go to 2nd, y= (this button is at the top of calculator), press enter, press enter again.

Then quit the screen and press graph.

If you do not see an image you might need to format your window to see the linear model.

  2. on your calculator, enter the data you are given into the table on the calculator. and then graph it. there should be a function button where you hit linear regression. the calculator basically draws a line through your set of points. it should also give you the equation of the line. so really, you don't have to do anything. the calculator does it all for you.

  3. If you must use the calculator with regression built in,, the first step is to read that part of the handbook.

    Look under "regression"?

Look for something that let's you input the columns, likely as x then y values.

  4. If you have a TI 83 you can press the [STAT] button (near the top), and enter [1] (edit).  From there you can enter your data for lists L1 and L2.  And after that you may clear the screen, and turn your diagnostics on by pressing [2nd],  [0] button (catalog) and scroll down to diagnostics and enter on.  Then you can go to [STAT], then scroll over one to the right (CALC) to see which line you want.  You probably want [4], LinReg (ax + b) which will give you a linear model for the data.  Sorry this is a rushed explination.  Good luck!

Edit: oh yeah, if you want to graph it, you can hit [2nd] [Y=] (at the top) and press enter on the first plot and make sure it has the lists you want and it should graph the dots.  from there at the Y= page you can enter [VARS] and press [5] (statistics) and scroll over 3 to the EQ and press [1] (RegEQ).  It should have typed in the equation you originally calculated into the Y1 or whichever you had highlighted.

  5. just punch in the data into the calculator or computer software.
