Precautions to take when traveling with credit/debit cards?

i am going to mexico for a week. i've heard stories about credit cards not working or being shut off when in other countries. what should i do before i leave the states to make sure that my checking and credit cards are going to work while i'm in mexico?

Notify your card company that you are traveling, give them the dates you will be out of the country, etc. That way they know not to freak out when they start seeing charges in Cancun or wherever.
