Question:

Preggo rat?

I just got a new rat about 2 weeks ago. She has always been kind of shy but she's been warming up to me. But then the last 2 or 3 days she's been very standoffish. I've noticed that she was getting fatter everyday since I brought her home so I put her on a diet. I thought maybe because I was feeding her better food then her previous owner she was scarfing it all down and that was making her fat. My original rat is still the same weight and my new rat is still getting fatter. It occurred to me this morning when I was checking on her that perhaps she is pregnant, since I can't find any other reason to explain the weight gain.

When I got the new rat I had assumed that she had been in a female only tank, but the guy I got her from, had got her from someone else just previously and she may have had time to mate then.

What are some signs I can look for to know if she is pregnant for sure?

Make sure to separate her from her friend during birthing. More information:

  2. Sometimes it's hard to figure out if a rat is pregnant. It does seem like a possibility in your case though. Rats are usually a bit grumpy when they're pregnant. And they have any interest in male rats. If you put your rat near a male, she won't have anything to do with him
