Question:

Pregnancy after vasectomy and tubal ligation?

My husband and I are 99.9% sure we do not want anymore kids, and due to rapidly progressing endometriosis, I will most likely need a hysterectomy by my 24th or 25th birthday.

We're expecting our second child in December and then I'll be asking for a tubal ligation, shortly followed by my husband's vasectomy. Yes, this is something we BOTH want done. We both want to be fixed.

Anyway, if that .1% chance sneaks up and we did end up wanting another child, is it still possible for us to become pregnant, perhaps via IUI or IVF?

  1. there is always a chance, but you'd need to speak w doc that will be performing the surgery to find out about the possible success of a reversal. typically they will have a different guess for the individual case.

  2. It's possible... They can go in and "get what hey need" from each of you, mix it and implant it..... Of course, that's assuming you haven't had they hysterectomy yet. I'm sorry for your situation, I had a hysterectomy relatively young too... (A web site called "hyster sisters" helped me out when I had mine)

  3. When going for a tubal or vas it is considered perm and you should not even be wondering about whether or not it would be possible for you or your husband to have or might end up wanting another child iif that .1% sneaks up.  The surgeon told me that is I had to ask this question or was thinking the same way you are then I was not ready for a tubal and need to wait a few years until I am 100% No if and or buts about it sure that I do not want anymore child EVER and also you are not to make this decision while pregnant becuase pregnancy is not the time to decide you will not want more children EVER.  You said will most likely need to have a hysterectomy by your 24th or 25th birthday (this means you are quite young right now) So why bother getting a tubal ligation done? (it is expensive whether you pay for it or Ohip pays for it, approx 3000-5000 for a tubal)  Once a hysterectomy is preformed you will never be able to have children ever again anyways and if your husband does a vas then after 3 months or so he will be free of sperm.  This gives you something to atleast think about.

  4. IUI would be out - without tubes there is no way for the sperm and egg to find each other and with the vasectomy, they would not be able to extract a large enough sperm sample to do an IUI . . .

IVF would be "possible" so long as you had not had a hysterectomy . . . the two of you would have to go through 3 invasive and expensive procedures.  They would do TESE / sperm aspiration to remove sperm from your husband, you would go through an IVF cycle - all of the meds, testing and egg retrieval.  They would then do something called ICSI where they take the sperm and inject it into the middle of the egg hoping for fertilization.  Just like an IUI - there would not be a sufficient sperm sample for a standard IVF process so they would have to do ICSI making each swimmer count, fertilize in the lab bypassing the tubes and then transfer the embryo back to you . . . very expensive, stressful and no guarantees for success but still an option.

    Reversals are also possible options.

Congrats on your current pregnancy!  Best wishes!

  5. ur still young i wouldnt advise is coz wen ur 30 u mite decide i want one more child and if the two of yas get it done i generally think have very little chance of havin a child...

maybe get the bar in ur arm or go on the pill... i think ul regret it if u do want yas are thinkin of doin...

but at the end of the day its ur decision jus make sure ur happy with it...
