Pregnancy and vitamins...?

I just found out that I'm pregnant, and I won't be seeing the doctor for another 2 weeks. Can I take Centrum vitamins or my children's vitamins in the mean time?

I have been pregnant 2 times and each time the over-the-counter prenatal vitamins have made me very sick to my stomach.

  1. i think its recommended to take ones specifically for pregnant women as normal ones may have wrong dosages which can harm the baby. have you tried pregnacare in the past? im currently taking it and its really good, doesnt make me feel sick like some of the others do. maybe just take folic acid for now until you can talk to your doctor for proper medical advice, this is what i done. good luck.

  2. if you cant take any prenatal vitamins i would say just take the folic acid ones till you can see your doctor, congrats

  3. centrum has a good women's vitamin, also lots of places like target carry prenatal vitamins that aren't that expensive, just try a kind you haven't tried before.

  4. You can take two flintstone vitamins a day or ask your Doc for his recommendations on a prenatal vitamin that will not make you sick...they have all kinds that have a coating that melts away slowly in your stomach and the coating helps with the nasty taste.

  5. My doc said Women's One a Day was good (they have extra Folic Acid) or Flintstone's Vitamins

  6. If you can get elevit where you are get them they have all the folic acid you need and all the nutrients you and bubs need if u aint sure ask a pharmacist they will help u.

  7. Congrats on the pregnancy hun!

ok so during pregnancy , we need more vitamins and minerals not only to assist in the baby's development , but also for our own benifits. You need to be getting at least 400mcg of folic acid , most conception , pregnancy and breastfeeding formulas (or just regular folate tabs) have around 500mcg. One common misconception is that we get enough iron from pregnancy supplements, the only thing with this is, they also contain calcium, and, calcium blocks iron absorbtion when taken together , so talk to ur doc and ask about that , usually they will say to take a pregnancy formula AND and iron supplement (usually one tab at night and iron in the morning)

I dare say the reason u felt ill with ur tabs was due to the iron , as most supplements are not chealated iron and require more digestion and can cause constipation. I am not an expert so probably best to talk to ur doc about these things.

Unfortunatly, we need folic acid in the very first weeks of pregnancy to deter neural tube defects , as this is developed usually before we are aware we r prgnant . Theres alot to consider, but dont stress about it to much, just be as healthy as u can , i hope i have helped. Good luck and congrats again! xoxo

  8. When I was having a hard time holding my vitamins down my doctor told me to take 2 gummy kids vitamins.  He said the gummy ones were better than the crunchy kind.  That should hold you over until you get to the doctor and find one you can take. I did find that the GNC prenatal vitamins were a little easier on my stomach as long as I took them with food. My doctor actually left me on those because he said they were just as good as prescription.
