  1. You probably do, I failed my 1 hour test and they didn't need me to do a 3 hour one cause my levels were so high. You need to eat things low in carbs. No cereal or juice in the morning ect. They will probably have you go see a dietician. It's not that bad. I thought it would be way worse.

  2. My best friend had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant and the hospital and doctor told her about a class that the hospital has to explain what you need to know and show you how to do your blood sugar checks and what to eat. Call your doctor or after the results for the test ask him about a class. On the other hand you are kinda far along so they might just put you on a diet but they might still have you do insulin shots.

  3. Whether you have GD or not can't be determined on the scores of your first testing or whether you fasted or not (since there could always be a fallacy with the test performed), this is why they do the more extensive 3 hour test. If you do indeed have gestational diabetes, your doctor will refer you to a nutritionist, you will be given a glucometer for daily testing and will test for ketones the first week or so. They'll suggest a whole foods diet for you using whole grains, meats, beans/legumes, cheeses, nuts, etc. A limitation to your daily calorie content and spreading your food consumption out into several (6-8) small meals and snacks. A reduction of sugar content in your food will be important, so no concentrated sugars, reduction in fruit and milk consumption. As to how much you reduce the various sugars (since many products, such as cereals, contain lower levels of sugar) or how much you eat will depend on your blood sugar levels (how your body responds). You'll find it's not too difficult to maintain this type of diet for the next 10 weeks, just try to be creative. Good luck.

  4. Its common for people to have high sugar levels with the 1 hour test. Try not to stress about it. I had to do the 3 hour test also, but it turns out that everything was perfectly normal. So don't worry about it just yet. If you do have GD then you will need to check you blood sugar and follow a pretty strict diet. Your doc will go over all of it with you. As of right now, don't stress until you know for sure. Good luck to you!

  5. I failed the 1 hour test and then failed the 3 hour test - which was really no surprise since diabetes runs in my family anyway (although I was not diabetic before the pregnancy and was not after the pregnancy).

Your doctor will probably send you to a dietitian or to classes for people with gestational diabetes (that's what I did).  They will give you a list of foods you can have as well as the serving size.  And they will give you list of the foods to avoid - corn in any form especially and juices.  You can have cereal in the morning as long as it's part of a well balanced meal.  The diet is an easy one to follow (you are allowed a certain amount of carbs, fats, proteins & fruits/vegetables per meal plus snacks) - it just takes some getting used to.  You will also be given a meter to test you sugar levels several times a day and they will show you how to do this at the class.

Just follow your doctor's instructions and you should do just fine.  Good Luck.
