What do female anesthesiologists do when pregnant? Do they wear respirators or temporarily leave their work positions?

What are the risks?

  1. We don't do much differently at all.  We give the gases and drugs to our PATIENTS, not to ourselves.

Precautions that we DO take include avoiding cases with Xray exposure and the use of methylmethacrylate (bone cement) which means we don't see too much ortho.  Some will also not do pediatric cases, because the mask inductions can sometimes expose us to a bit of gas (especially if we're wrestling a toddler)

I spent half my residency pregnant, and have two very bright, normal daughters to show for it.  (OK, one is high maintenance, but I don't think that has anything to do with anesthetic exposure)
