Pregnant Guinea pig!!!

I adopted a guinea pig who is pregnant. Her previous owner has no idea how far into her pregnancy she is. What are the signs i can look for to know she is close to having the piglets? She is large, and i can see her stomach moving when the little guys inside move.

PS, she is under 7 months so she should be fine with the hip bones stretching for them to come out.

  1. I breed guinea pigs and since they are so unpredictable when it comes to giving birth, I always check (everyday) to see if her pelvic bones are separated. It is like dilation in a human. Once she is like a pinky width she should have them with in 24-48 hours. The fact that you can SEE them move indicates she could have them any where from now to 2 weeks. Just keep checking the pelvic bones!! Has always worked for me!!

  4. Hi!

A guinea pigs gestation period last from 59-72 days, with an average of 63-68 days.  I have found that generally when a guinea pig is close to giving birth their stomach will become very hard and large (the poor little thing can look huge depending on how many she is having!).  You will find that when you feel her stomach you can make out little limbs- its quite cool!  She may even take on an 'aubergine' shape, although this may vary.

When you see movements inside her stomach you know that she will give birth within the week (give or take a couple of days)!  The pups become more active in the womb at this stage.  When she gives birth she will make grunts and squeals and will move around her cage rather agitatedly.  The pups will emerged covered in a sac which will then be eaten by their mother so they can breath.  Yes, they will eat the afterbirth- this is normal!!!  Keep an eye on them to make sure that she cleans them up.  She is rather young and birth can sometimes be difficult at a young age.

    Hope this helps!
