My mare is about 2 months pregnant. I worry that too much excertion will hurt or snuff the developing embryo. What would be the safe limit as to how active she can be?

  1. I rode my mare until 2 weeks before the foal. I thought she was getting really fat but turns out a gentleman caller had passed through the property one night (living on a large outback property you can't always control the wildlife!).

She had a healthy natural birth and the foal was fine.

I guess don't stress her too much with hard workouts but continue to ride her for many months yet.

  2. Don't baby your horse, ride it like usual but just not as hard, just walking and trotting will probably do her sivce a friend of mine once had her mare in foal and she babied her horse till the foals health, and it ended up being born without front legs so they had to put it down. =[ =( sad eh so don't let that be you aswell.

  3. You are aloud to ride her up to 2 months before she has the baby, just avoid kicking her in the sides to get her moving.

  4. I would say the normal amount of exercise and pasture turnout is good for the first months, then reduce the amount of loping and begin only trotting in her last months. And if you ride her don't cinch her saddle to snug or it could cause her discomfort. But mainly the mare knows her limits and if your not being too forceful in her exercise she will let you know when she needs to rest. She knows whats best for her foal :)

  5. Some people even show their pregnant mares up until the last final months. I would do light work with her walk, trot in the beginning and then in her final months just let her go in the pasture. I wouldn't do any major work with her, besides better be safe then sorry. So in the last months just let her be pasture bound, she will probably get lots of exercise just running around. One of the mares at my barn was let out in the pasture the day she had the baby. They brought her in and within two hours the baby foal was born. For exercise she was just let out in the pasture, no one was riding her and she was fine. Good luck!

  6. you'd be surprised how active she can be without her hurting her embryo. She should be getting the average amount of excercise, nothing over the top, some cantering, trotting, power walking. She will be fine. After all, wild mares in the wild run like the wind even if they are pregnant and they are fine. Of course, reduce the amount of excercise when she get's nearer to her due date, but until then, get her out!

  7. Like humans excercise is wonderful for expecting mares as well. At this point you should be fine keeping at the normal amount of exercise she is used to. Don't really nned to increase it as that would put stress on her but what she's used to it's going to bother her at all.

When it gets into the later months (final trimester) and she is larger and heavier then you'll need to cut back. After about the 9th month point just pasture turnout would be great.

  8. don't ride her so she is really sweating
