Question:

Pregnant by an American man... what now?

I've recently returned from a vacation in America, and discovered that i am pregnant from a man that i became very close to.

I intend to keep it, but what now?

I want my child to grow up with a father in it's life. But, how would we go about it? Visa wise? I mean, does giving birth to a child by an American automatically entitle me to a visa? We are certainly not ready to get married anytime soon =/

I don't know what to do! Help!?

  1. you getting knocked up by an American doesn't automatically entitle u to a visa (It Don't Work That Way). shame your not asking for U.S citizenship....GET MARRIED ALREADY

  2. I think you were more than close to the guy. That kind of development demands a little more than closeness

Get a little more information about the birds and the bees

  3. Geez, what are you doing?  You had a baby with a guy that you barely know???!!!   Where are your parents?  Didn't they teach you not to do things like this?

  4. Do you know whether the father has any interest in claiming parentage of this child?  Or will you have to do a paternity test and sue for child support?  Parents can be forced to pay child support, but they can't be forced to be involved in their offspring's lives.  Of course children can grow up with parents in different countries - heard of that Obama guy?

If a US citizen is the parent the child can claim US citizenship, but you are entitled to nothing.  You could apply for US residency, he could apply for UK residency.  Does fathering a child on a UK citizen automatically entitle him to a visa (it may - I'm not being sarcastic)?   You could sneak back and have the baby in the US but I don't see what good that would do.  It would cost more and either the father is willing or he isn't.  If he isn't your presence in the US illegally is unlike to work to your advantage.

  5. The baby entitles you to nothing.  If it's not born in the US, or if the father will not establish paternity, it won't even be a US citizen.

If the father refuses to admit paternity you might be able to come to the US, retain legal counsel, and request the court to order testing to establish paternity which would get the baby US citizenship.  Of course, the father could demand shared custody and/or visitation.  You could get support payments.

Still, none of this would entitle you to a visa.

  6. it seems to me that the first thing to do? is to speak to the man you met and ask what he thinks about this?

does he not know that you are pregnant?

having the child entitles you to any rights? the answer is no,

looks like you are going to do some serious thinking and perhaps including the man you have met?

  7. You could return to the US and have your baby.  That way your child is automatically a US citizen and you could stay too because you are it's mother.  This will also allow you to seek the father for monetary responsibility if you need to.  Or you could just stay in the UK and raise your baby.  I would suggest the first option since he IS partially responsible for the baby.  Good luck.
