I bought a female guppy several weeks ago and she was pregnant when I got her. I don't know how far along she was or anything about when it happened or the who the daddy is because she was purchased at a pet store unisex guppy tank. I keep her in a 29 gallon tank with algae eaters, 6 zebra danios, another female guppy, and a male guppy; i know they all would eat the babies but I don't have a free tank right now. Anyways, I know that fish's colors dull at night and look white-ish pink and when I walked in the fish room, the pregnant female guppy was sleeping with her gravid spot pink as well. She doesn't look deflated or anything, just her gravid spot looks very dulled, maybe because the babies are faded at night too? Or did she have her fry and they were eaten? It was her first batch of fry anyways (so i was told) so it may have only been a few and didn't deflate her too much.

I don't usually see the fish tank at night so i haven't really seen the pregnant guppy in these circumstances. She looks similar to the guppy in this photo http://www.liveaquaria.com/images/categories/product/p-89831-black-phantom-delta.jpg except the black starts behind her gravid spot so it is very noticeable.

  1. if she has a square stomach she may give birth within a few hours.she has shown many signs of birth by what you explain

  2. I had the same situation.  The dark spot is actually the eyes of the babies and their instinct upon birth is to swim out of danger (even if that means swimming down into your gravel and burying themselves alive).  Chances are either you have a bunch of dead babies in your gravel (they are VERY VERY tiny) or they were eaten.
