I have a female guinea pig and she is happy and healthy and about 5 months old. She is pregnant, however when this happened is unsure. I want to know how close she is to giving birth, she is very large and I can feel the babies moving constantly now. Her pelvic bones have separated about 3/4 and inch and her teats are very swollen. If you can give me any advice that would be great!

  1. my guinea pigs pregnant aswell , and so has hers ,i am a begining breeder and it should be with in the next 2-3 days if you can insert two fingers into her pelvic bones . good luck x-stephany-x

  2. the piggy's will probably come soon because they don't have 9 month pregnancy's like humans do and give her fresh veggies and water everyday clean her cage every three days just in case the babies come and you really don't want them tobe born in a dirty cage. try not to pick her up alot once or twice every tim you clean her cage. and Uhmm i guess that's all i can tell you.. and vet check up with be needed like ultrasounds. XD

    good luck

  3. Sounds like it could be any time now.

    Here is some good reading:

Be sure you're feeding her well. She needs extra nutrients right now and a small fruit snack every other day wouldn't hurt.

  4. take her to the vets that is your best bet just incase.

some female pigs have problems giving birth and can die during it, so your best to go see your vet, you piggy can then have a full check up to make sure her and the babies are in tip top condition. :)

    hope everything goes well.

  7. From your description it sounds as if she is very close to littering, 24-48 hours.

As long as she is eating and drinking she really doesn't need to go to a vet. The journey, the unfamiliar smells and sounds of the vet office and being handled by a stranger are only going to stress her and probably lead to toxaemia (which will kill her).

An ultrasound is completely pointless and stressful for her UNLESS she appears to have a problem. If she has been straining for more than 30 minutes and not produced a baby, or if she goes off her food and seems listless / depressed (eyes dull and coat looking dull) THAT is when you need an urgent trip to the vet.

It may be useful to have an ‘emergency plan’ sorted out – how will you get to the vet if you cannot drive, how would you contact the vet ‘out of hours’, do you have a box ready with some bedding to carry her in etc.

For now just allow her to remain quietly in her cage with plenty of fresh veg/grass and I’m sure it will all go OK. Good luck!
