Question:

Pregnant guinea pig...no babies yet?

I had posted a question a few days ago, i'm just very anxious about the situation. My guinea pig has not had her babies yet and I thought it should be within the next two days but so far nothing. Her pelvic bone is two fingers apart now and still no labor. When can I expect them because the babies move all the time and kick A LOT now. I want to be there for the birth in case something goes wrong. Can anyone give some more insight? Maybe i'm not feeling the right place for the pelvic bone? Thanks!

  1. The time that a sows pelvic bones are open is around 48 hours before birth. In an older sow who has had previous litters it is rarely more than 48 hours. If it is a sow's first litter the bones open more slowly and can seem to have been open a week or more. If she is still eating and moving around her cage happily there is probably nothing wrong and you just need to wait.

There are two places to check the bones. I always check them underneath the sow - on her tummy, really just in front of her female bits. I have seen people check them on the top - just at the very lowest part of her back just above where the tail would be if they had one!

The best description I have ever read was that it feels like the gap between your knuckle bones - that's clever because it describes it perfectly. Do you have a non-pregnant sow that you could handle and compare with yours to feel the difference?

  2. wel that pretty much answers it

  3. have you read http://www.guinealynx.info/reproduction.... and http://www.guinealynx.info/breeding.html

  4. guinea pig gestation is about 67 days.

  5. just keep her unstressed. if she is still like that in a few days, maybe take her to the vet, but just try to let her naturally go into labour, vet induced ones normally dont work as well.

    Did you have any problems??

I am hopefully getting my boar today to try and breed with my sow!

    Could i email you?
