I'm currently an independent contractor and work as a special education teacher for young children with autism. I am covered under my husbands health insurance, but what happens when I get pregnant. Is there any way to receive some type of social security or disability when I can no longer work due to the pregnancy?

  1. Well, most women can work until they go into labor.   They just don't WANT to.  And again, most women can be back at work within a week, if they WANT to.

If you're in NY or CA, AND you've paid into the state disability program, you can get coverage for a maternity leave (usually six weeks).

Social security is for permanent disabilities - like if you have a stroke during labor, and are paralyzed for the rest of your life.   If you've paid into it long enough, you might qualify.  But it's not for short term.

Best thing - save your money.

  2. generally not.. payment for lost time is generally provided by short term disability.. then long term disability insurance.. if you don't have any you aren't covered... check with your insurance company... but generally pregnancy is NOT considered a disability.

  3. Give me a break!

Most females work up until the day they deliver when they are pregnant.  Pregnancy is NOT a disability.  You'll just have to tough it out like the rest of the female population.

  4. You would have to check with the policy, maternity leave might be considered as a short term disability but each policy is different.
