I've been having horrible discomfort and pain this pregnancy and was wondering what everyone else has done that has helped?

I'm having terrible hip pain, my lower back HURTS from time to time, I get abdominal cramps... just horrible, uncomfortable pains...

What works? I can't keep taking tylenol, it just doesn't work very well...

  1. I am in your position. The tylenol does not work for me. I found out what was causing my problems (back pain, cramps, and hips) are being caused by an irritable uterus - which is really really common and tends to happen in the summer months - it is just very small contractions of the uterus that don't change the cervix- I didn't know I was having them but a fetal monitor showed I was. I have been drinking TONS of water and it is really helping. I am trying to drink what they told me 16 8oz glasses of water a day. It's a challenge - but I bring a water bottle with me and I'm really happy for it. Because of how I was feeling I was willing to try anything - I'm not 100% better but it's better than when I showed up at L&D.

  2. There's not much you can do, but here's some tips.

    1.  Check your posture.  We tend to stick our stomaches out and flex our backs thinking that this will ease the pressure.  In reality, it makes it much worse.  Try to stand tall and "tuck" that bulging tummy down.  That will take some of the pressure off the back.

    2.  My OB told me just this morning that most of my hip pain would be relieved if I would move more slowly from a standing to sitting to lying down position.  He said that quick, forced movement aggrevates an already hurting hip.  He told me "slowly down, slowly up" will help a bit.

    3.  By your saying "this pregnancy" makes me think that you have other children like I do.  I have found that my holding my son to the side which doesn't hurt at the time can really cause me pain later.  He prefers my left side which is the hip that is always bothering me.  I try to hold me across my front which he doesn't really like and hefted so that I can still stand tall and "tucked" when I have him.  Of course, there's nothing you can do about the back pain from picking the kids up.

    4.  Think about activities you are doing that require stooping.  For example, I find that my pushing the stroller can really make me hurt at night because I am constantly leaning when I push it, bending down to give drinks or to talk to my son, etc.  Putting him in the carseat, taking him out of the crib. All this is the same motion done over and over again which kills your back.  I would get help with these kinds of activities as much as possible even if it's saying to someone, "My purse is there on the floor.  Would you pick it up for me?"   My reduced stooping has really made a difference.

  3. I think we just have to live with it!!! Just keep counting the days, lol.

  4. Have you tried having warm baths?  It may help.  Also going to a registered massage therapist is great - make sure that they have worked on pregnant women before you.  If you have good health insurance it should even be covered.  All of my massages are covered up to $750/year before doctors notes and $2000 with doctors notes.  Good luck.

  5. My Dr gave me Fioricet for pain.

  6. If you can, go and see a physio - specially one who deals with pregnant women - they can help you out with  gentle exercises that can relieve some of the discomfort.

I wore a support bandage (like a body stocking) around my bump from about 30 weeks, and that really helped with back and side pain, as it gave me a bit more support and took some of the strain off my muscles/ligaments.

Not *too* much longer to go though - hang in there!

  7. yes u can tae tylenol, just try to stay off your feet a lot and keep them  up, btw how far a long are you??

  8. I had the same exact problems. I took tylenol on a daily bases and it just doesn't seem to work. So I talked to my doctor and she had to prescribe me tylenol 3, which has codine in it. It's been working so far.

  9. I have fallen in love with my hot pack this pregnancy!!! I would recommend it to anyone with aches and pains!
