Question:

Pregnant without Health Insurance?

by  |  earlier

I just found out I'm pregnant and I don't have health insurance because I work through a temp agency. I am married. Can I apply for Medicaid and state my income alone or do I have to include my husbands? We already have debts we need to pay. (please don't tell me we should have thought of this or that before hand) I'm just looking for advice and to give best answer 10pts.

  1. yes there is help out there the franklin country welfare should help you and yes you have to let them know you are married and your income and your husband income also you just have to tell them the truth.   good luck with the baby and with the help

  2. Yikes.  If your husband's income is too high then you will not qualify for Medicaid.  But you can always try.  Another solution is to file for legal separation from your husband and shh... no one has to know that you've done it.  Then, you will qualify for Medicaid for your entire pregnancy.  You may qualify anyway without having to do that.  There's like an emergency type Medicaid just for pregnancies.  I would call and find out all of the details or look it up on the Department of Social Services website before actually going in to apply.

  3. Go to your local health center and sign up for their WIC Women Infant and Children's Program. http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/aboutwic/wic...

This program helps pregnant women through pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth or after pregnancy ends

Check what they can offer you,

  4. You have to count HOUSEHOLD income, which includes your husband's.

BUT, the income guidelines are MUCH more lenient!

  5. If you truly cannot afford prenatal care and the delivery I would turn to Social Services and Clinics. (I think each state has a Job and Family Services Division. If not that one like it.) They will not turn you away if you fall into the income levels they provide. You will always need to divulge all income in your household which they will compare to the number in household. If your income level prohibits this assistance than lifestyle changes are the only way.

Sell what you do not need and live more simply than you can ever imagine. Take advantage of Food Pantries, clothing pantries and Free Cycle groups. There are probably Free Hot Meal Programs in your area. There is typically no income information for either, but food pantries will usually ask for proof of residency. Good luck and do not be sheepish in looking into these programs that are already in place.

Best of luck to you and your family. Embrace this gift and you'll make it! PLW
