Preliminary rounds of day four of the 2011 Telkom South Africa National Championship
2011 Telkom South Africa National Championship continues on its fourth day at the Newton Park Pool in Port Elizabeth on Thursday.
The championship provides a platform for national swimmers from various teams to compete and secure a possible place in the South African Swimming Team to compete in Shanghai at the 2011 World Championships.
The session included the preliminary rounds of the 50m breast-stroke, 50m back-stroke, 100m butterfly, 100m breast-stroke, 100m back-stroke, 50m freestyle and 400m Individual Medley in the Men’s and Women’s category..
The session initiated with the preliminary rounds of the Men’s 50m breast-stroke, where KZNA-KZ’s Neil Versfeld transpired as the fastest swimmer to qualify into the semi-finals, clocking a time of 28.94 seconds. CGA-CG’s Jared Pike and NTS-NT’s Cameron
Van Der Burgh followed her into the finals as the second and third fastest swimmers in a time of 29.15 and 29.37 seconds respectively.
Later, NTS-NT’s Chanelle Van Wyk occupied the fastest qualification spot in the Women’s 50m back-stroke. She posted a stupendous 29.32 seconds effort to make her way into the final whereas her timing was only 0.25 seconds away from the FINA A-Time Qualification
Standard. Her team member, Karin Prinsloo followed her on the podium for the second fastest qualification spot, touching the wall in a time of 29.34 seconds while WPA-WP’s Ashley Cooper ended third in 30.52 seconds.
In the Men’s 100m butterfly, Dylan Bosch of CGA-CG dominated the event with a timing of 54.19 seconds. Heinri Alberts and Sebastien Rousseau followed him into the final, clocking a time of 54.58 and 54.60 seconds.
In the Women’s 100m breast-stroke, KZNA-KZ’s Suzaan Van Biljon proved her fastest qualification into the semi-finals with a time of 1:11.11 minutes. The 22-year-old Van Biljon was comfortably ahead of the NTS-NT’s Franko Jonker and KZNA-KZ’s Tara Nicholas,
who emerged as the second and third fastest swimmer in a time of 1:12.35 and 1:12.59 minutes.
Then, Charl Crous produced a wonderful swim in the Men’s 100m back-stroke, touching the wall in 55.29 seconds. He was followed by Darren Murray and George du Rand, who touched the wall for second and third in a time of 55.41 and 57.41 seconds.
Next was the Women’s 50m freestyle, where Karin Prinsloo appeared as the fastest swimmer to qualify in the finals in a time of 26.18 seconds. Trudi Maree and Natalie Elphick followed her in the final as the second and third fastest swimmers in a time of
26.58 and 26.85 seconds respectively.
The last event of the session was the Men’s 400m Individual Medley, where Michael Klueh secured fastest qualification spot in 4:33.85 minutes ahead of the Ayrton Sweeney and Mar Husselmann, who clocked 3:39.28 and 4:41.08 minutes.
The semi-finals and finals of the same events will be conducted in the next session, where the winners will be confirmed their spots for Shanghai.
